The Dance Lesson

By: Lisa O’Connell (Scaper2)
Disclaimer: insert your favorite witty disclaimer here. Obviously if any of us owned Farscape we’d be writing scripts, not fanfic.
Rated: PG
Songs used: “Summer Wind” recorded by several people including Frank Sinatra, jazz version by Mel Hood. “Crazy for this girl” by Evan and Jaron.
Personal note: Please be kind--this is the first thing I’ve written (excluding checks) since high school!

John found Aeryn on the terrace. “Hey, Sunshine.”

She looked back over her shoulder at him, “Hey. Were you looking for me?”

“No, but I know that you’ve been coming here for about an arn each night lately, so I thought I’d join you.”

“I find I like to look at the stars before I go to sleep.” She admitted a little shyly, this being a not very Peacekeeper-like exercise.

“I know what you mean,” he responded. “It sure is beautiful here. I never get tired of the view.” He was no longer looking at the stars but rather looking at Aeryn. “And, I found something that I thought I would share with you.”

“What is it?” she asked, curious to see what the human had discovered now.

“Something from home,” as he pulled his little silver tape recorder, and several miniature tapes out of his duffel bag. He put in a tape and the music started to play.

“What do you call this?”

“This music?” he asked. “It’s called ‘jazz’, or umm ‘a romantic ballad,” as he walks over to stand in front of her, “or just ‘magic’.”

“Magic?” she had never heard of any ‘magic’ that was like this sound.

“Yep,” as he stepped into her space.

**The summer winds come blowing in from across the sea,

It was one of my parents’ favorite songs,” he said. “Let’s dance,” as he held out his hand.

“What’s dank?” she asked.

**To bring you back, to touch your hair and walk with me,

“It’s easy, I’ll show you,” as he stepped close enough to see the flecks of blue in her gray eyes.

**All summer long we sang a song and strolled the golden sands,

**Two sweethearts and the summer wind.

“First, you take my hand,” she complied, though still tentatively, “then I put my arm around your waist like so,” she allowed this with a shy smile and a furrowed brow, “and then you let me lead…”

Aeryn dropped her hand and pulled back, “Where are we going?” confused, and a bit frustrated. “I thought you were going to teach me to dank-whatever that is?”

“To dance Aeryn, I’m teaching you to dance.” He grinned and gathered her back into his arms. “And on my planet- the man ‘leads’ the dance. The woman relaxes in the man’s arms and he…’steers’, I guess you could call it.”

“Humph.” She is still not sure what he is talking about, but after all her training as a soldier she is used to taking orders-so she decided to play along.

**Like painted kites those days and nights they went flying by*

“This is a common practice on your planet?” sounding not at all sure, as she slipped her arm around his waist.

“Yes, everywhere.” As he started to slowly spin Aeryn around the floor.

**The world was new, beneath the blue umbrella sky

**Then softer than the piper man, one day it called to you

**I lost you to the summer wind.

She feels awkward at first, but holds on as the music plays.

“Been around forever,” John assured her, “though in lots of different forms. Sometimes much faster,” thinking of rock and alternative music, “or slower and much closer,” thinking of some of the more sensual dancing he had seen, but never been ready to try. “Sometimes it’s even done in a line; with the men on one side and the women on the other.”

“Wouldn’t that make it difficult to lead?” as she leaned back in his arms, to look into his clear blue eyes.

“Um-humm,” he agreed, “and not nearly as much fun, in my book,” as he held her a little closer to him, tucking her hand to his chest.

**The autumn wind and the winter wind, they’ve come and gone

**And still the days, those lonely days, they just go on and on

**And guess who sighed those lullabies to days that never end

**My fickle friend, my lovely friend, well, my fickle friend the summer wind

**The summer wind, the summer wind, the summer wind

The song stopped and so did Aeryn, though she didn’t pull away.

“It’s stopped.” She said to those soft blue eyes.

“Umm, what’s stopped?” Not taking his eyes off her face.

“The music.” she said with a smile.

“Humm,” he closed his eyes as the next song started.

**She rolls the window down

**And she talks over the song

**Of the cars that pass us by

**And I don’t know why

**But she’s changed my mind

“This one is different than the first.”

“Yep, I have eclectic tastes.”

She gave him “that” look, “Electric what?”

“Eclectic, Aeryn,” he chuckled. “It means varied, different.”

“Yes, Crichton, you are that.”

That brought his eyes open, just in time to see her mischievous grin.

**And I look at her and she looks at me

**She’s got me thinking about her constantly

**But she don’t know how I feel

**And she carries on with out a doubt

**I wonder if she’s figured out that I’m crazy for this girl

**Yeah, I’m crazy for this girl

John reached up his free hand and stroked her hair.

Her eyes slowly closed as she leaned her head back into his hand, as they continued to gently sway.

**She was the one to hold me

**The night the sky fell down

**And what was I thinking when the world didn’t end

**Well, I know, I know now

John stroked his thumb gently down her cheek, as she leaned her head on his chest, nestled in his arms.

**I look at her and she looks at me

**She’s got me thinking about her constantly

**But she don’t know how I feel

He slid his thumb down her throat, he could feel the warm pulse in her neck.

**And she carries on with out a doubt

**I wonder if she’ll figure out that I’m crazy for this girl

**Yeah, I’m crazy for this girl

“Aeryn?” he brought his hand up to stroke her cheek again, thinking how wonderfully soft her skin is.

“Humm?” she breathed, with her eyes closed.

**Right now

**(Right now)

**Face to face

**(Face to face)

**All my fears

**(All my fears)

**Pushed aside

**Right now

**I’m ready to spend the rest of my life with you.

“You do this well.” He is rewarded with a lazy, beautiful smile.

“Thank you,” she whispered. “I had a good instructor,” as she swayed, contented in his arms.

**When I look at her and she looks at me

**She’s got me thinking about her constantly’

**But she don’t know how I feel

**And she carries on with out a doubt

**I wonder if she’s figured out that I’m crazy for this girl

**Yeah, I’m crazy for this girl

“Aeryn?” he whispered as he leaned down and just touched her neck with his lips.

“Yes, John?” she whispered back.

Suddenly the comm channel clicked on, “Officer Sun, Commander Crichton?”

“Yes, Pilot” John responded huskily, as breathed in the scent of her hair.

“You are both needed on command, immediately! We may have a problem.”

Aeryn reluctantly lifted her head from John’s chest to look into his eyes. “We’ll be right there, Pilot,” she said as she touched his cheek. “Thank you for the lesson,” she said, then she rose up on her toes a little and kissed him gently. “Will there be more?”

John grinned down at her, “You can bet on it!” He promised.
