Exodus from Genesis
Hi everyone! Welcome to another review from the SACC point of view! Today we examine the show that is...Exodus from Genesis.
WARNING!: Insert generic spoiler warning here!
Overall:
-
This episode brings back fond memories...it was the one that started my addiction to Farscape. While it has a simpler story as compared to some of the episodes that were to come, it's clean has some great twists and turns, and a lot of GREAT acting! The Invasion of the Body Snatcher Space Cockroaches was fun to watch, and the evolution throughout the show of how the crew views these beings are summed up nicely in the "lower lifeform" speech Aeryn gives at the end. They start as bugs to be squashed, then turn into a deadly invading force with no purpose, and then an intelligent hive with a reason behind it's attacks.
Crichton:
-
This episode does offer an interesting twist on Obligatory Crichton Bashing: he gets his ass kicked by the psudo-Zhaan, the psudo-Aeryn, and then even the psudo-himself! Although how many of us can say they ripped their own head off! :-) This ep. gets a
Psudo-Wacked rating.
-
At least he didn't die.
The Good:
-
The whole Dentic scene was GREAT! As this was one of the first episodes, we expect that Crichton is still learing about the "simple" things. And D'Argo's reaction to his refusal to stick the Dentic in his mouth is characteristic of the crew's reaction to Crichton in the beginning: This is the way we do things here, deal with it! Although it *is* obvious Crichton has been learning; he knows how fast "Hetch" is and how fast Moya can go in that measurement, and he is starting to be able to read the control panels.
-
Aeryn's reaction when she is asked if she ever served on a Marauder was beautifully acted by Claudia. It's obvious in that split second after being asked that she regrets never getting the chance to serve on one, and then hides her hurt quickly.
-
The CGI overall was excellent, and the melding of the CGI bugs with the live action worked really well.
-
Lots of juicy Pilot scene's! I've said it before, but I can't help but be fascinated by Pilot, and in those few minutes I think about him as a puppet and not a living being I'm even more impressed by his utter believability. His reaction to D'Argo cutting into Moya was wonderful, one of the few times we get a furious Pilot actually growling! And his scene's with Aeryn were very tender and understanding.
-
There's a WONDERFUL shot, when Crichton is yelling into the hole for Rygel, and after a few yells we see a figure drop from the ceiling behind him (the psudo-Crichton). I just think this shot is BEAUTIFUL, the setup, the music, the focus...wow!
-
It's fascinating to see who Aeryn turned to when she felt she was going to suffer the Living Death: Not Zhaan, who possibly couldn't kill, not D'Argo, who certainly could do it and would, but Crichton.
"A friend would do this, family." That's an interesting dynamic for peacekeepers to have.
-
Rygel gets to show his negotiating assets, and ends up being as good as he boasts.
-
Finally this show is truly a team show! We get all the characters working together in almost equal portions to solve the situation. That's one of the best things about Farscape, watching the characters interact.
The Bad:
-
The only thing I didn't like was this episode appeared to be Everyone State the Obvious
Show!
-
D'Argo - (after Aeryn explains what they are doing) Pilot, stay behind the debris!
-
Crichton - (After everyone views the hologram) That's another ship!
-
Crichton - (After being told the ship is scanning) They're scanning...that's scanning...
-
D'Argo - (After Rygel says if he moves the Drak get disagreeable) Right, don't move!
-
Oy! And there were more! I know once or twice it was as a joke, but come on!
SACC's Style Spot:
-
The layered leather outfits the peacekeepers wear, while stylish for those raids on Leviathan transports, can't be very cool. They also look, up close, a bit like those outfits that trainers use when they're going to let an attack dog taken them down. :-)
The Nitpicky:
-
So Crichton brought the tape recorder to document his mission, extra underwear because he always listens to his mother, and a comb so he wouldn't have helmet head when he landed back on Earth so he could impress the chicks.
-
Added Dialogue: D'Argo- "Hive?" Rygel- "Too many letters Luxian? Try nest!"
D'Argo- (after a moment of counting letters on his fingers) "Hey wait a minute!"
-
You know if I was Rygel I think I'd be rather insulted that there were no clones of me!
-
More Added Dialogue: Crichton- (to Monarch at the end) "I think I can speak for all of us when...I say I'm going to get blown off again."
That's why you got your ass kicked in the third grade, you fought fair! - John Crichton
