#30: Creation Farscape Convention Report Day 1 (Thursday)

Author: Lauren (OboeCrazy)

My life as a professional musician makes it both very easy and very difficult to go to science fiction conventions. Unlike most people, I have an incredibly flexible schedule, allowing me to take off whenever needed by simply not accepting a gig for the time I need to leave. However I don't make a lot of money. So going to the Farscape Creation Con was a balancing act between how much time away from gigs can I take and yet still have enough money to go to the darn thing.

Thus Thursday is mostly a blur to me, considering the day before I'd just finished a tour with the Irish Tenors. They'd played the night before in Albany NY, a good 4 hour drive away. Fortunately the orchestra had a bus to take, so I didn't have to drive myself there and back, but it also meant that we didn't get back to Buffalo until about 3am.

My flight left Buffalo at 9am.

I needed to be at the airport at 7am (the oboe always makes me a target for security).

I had to be up by 6:30am.

So I was running on about 3 hours of sleep when I landed in sunny, smoggy, beautiful LAX Thursday afternoon. I was saved from the Super Shuttle by Ann and John, who were nice enough to let me ride in the back of their rental car to the hotel, and by dinner time I was running on excitement and adrenaline. FINALLY I was in Burbank!

I met up with Roomie and Good Friend LynnR, who I hadn't seen since I'd fled the state of FL a few months earlier, and Opera Buddy and Good Friend Elnea, who I hadn't seen since the last ScaperCon. We were all hungry as Rygel, so we took an expensive cab ride into town, got ourselves some expensive dinner, ate some expensive chocolate, and had an expensively good time! The highlight beside the company had to be the Christmas decorations around the city, who's planners had thought it wise to place gigantic red balls all over the place as if we'd stumbled onto the remains of a gigantic ornament sale. Late at night, on no sleep and a full belly with good friends, there's nothing funnier then two huge gigantic balls.

We got back to the hotel in time to meet up with other Roomies and Good Friends Accapella and Mnemennth, and we all trooped over to the convention center to stand in line and get our admission squared away.

We spent a lot of time standing in line that weekend. See?

With passes all settled we browsed the goodies, bought some pictures to get signed, and then retired back to the hotel. I'd planned on staying up late in the bar having fun, but sleep finally caught up with me and I crashed around midnight.

Go on to Day 2 (Friday)!
