Day 3 (Saturday)
I began Saturday morning with an opera rehearsal...something that was perfectly normal to me, as a professional oboist, but certainly received strange looks from many of the other Scapers wondering what I was doing out of bed so early. The gang at Creation were nice enough to let us get onstage in the morning to practice with the microphones and everything. It was a little nerve-racking to know we'd be performing on the same stage that the cast and crew were talking on, but a bit exciting as well! We managed to get through the whole thing except for the last song, a sing-a-long filk to "Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay" called "Farscape Fans Are Here To Stay". But everyone knows that song, we've performed it before, no problem, right?
Some behind-the-scenes pics of ScaperOpera...
As the convention began right out of the gate we had Brian Henson, who was very sweet and took tons of questions. It was a thrill seeing him live...I'd grown up on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, and it was the Henson name that got me to watch Farscape in the first place. So getting a chance to see him was a personal high, and made me feel like a kid again!
- Yes, Brian Henson DOES rock!
Next came David Franklin, a man who's as sexy as he is talented. He took a ton of questions as well, and gave some interesting insights to the few scenes Captain Braca appeared in. I was very happy to see him clean shaven. I don't know what was going on in the Mini with that soul patch! He also did a great Elvis impersonation, singing a bit on request. Half the females in the room swooned as he did the whole Elvis hip swaying thing.
- David as Elvis. I'll take David!!
- Hey, who's that pointing a gun at David!?
After that was the Frelly Awards and the Fanfic Panel, but I admit to skipping out on that to get some food, hang out with friends, and generally enjoy some Scaper time. I'd missed having a ScaperCon this year, and most of the time at Burbank there was some kind of panel or rehearsal to go to and I didn't get the same kind of time to just chat with Scapers. The good thing about Burbank was I finally got a chance to meet up with some Scapers I'd never met in person before, as well as see some old friends from the last few years.
Me with friends...
Gigi Edgley came bouncing on the stage barefoot mid-afternoon, and was a constantly moving bundle of energy back and forth across the stage taking questions. She chatted a bit about the joys and problems getting back into character and costume, and gave a bit of insight into the difference between the old Chiana eyes and the new Chiana eyes in the Mini.

- A nice shot...with those bare feet!
- Gigi signs the sign for auction later
Right after Gigi came Anthony Simcoe, who started off calm, cool and dressed and slowly got more and more excited, animated, and stripped. Not that anyone minded. *grin* Of course many people wanted to know about his final scenes as D'Argo, and he spoke at wonderful length about how the idea came up, what the reasoning was, and how much he would love to see some way of D'Argo returning for a feature film. He also gave a bit of a sneak peak into "Eddy's Place In Space", a show he directed that co-stars many fellow Farscape alumni. Right now it looks like Eddy's Place is stuck in development Hell, but I'm sure if anyone can get it funded it's a bunch of rabid Scapers!
- Anthony talk about "Eddie's Place In Space"
After a bit more auction madness Francesca Buller appeared on stage and also took tons of questions. She gave a wonderful bit of backstory on how the physical transformations into all her characters on Farscape helped create the characters. Many people wanted to know about Aknah, that black corset, and those heels...and how Mr. Browder feels about his wife wearing black leather corsets, heels, and throwing him around.
- Fran took lots of questions and moved around a lot...thus so few pics!
There was a bit of break, both to get set up for the talent contest and to do some autographs. I hung around in back for a few hours waiting for my chance to get autographs with Anthony and Gigi, and they certainly went above and beyond the call sticking around for HOURS to sign for everyone! I was near the end of the line, and they looked so tired but still grinning, being enormously wonderful, and having fun. The chocolate truffles I'd brought as a present were snatched up and eaten pretty darn quick, and I now have some lovely signed pictures to hang on the wall.
Now it was time for the talent/costume show. I'd brought along the oboe, and had prepared a little musical guide to Farscape, blending the music associated with about a dozen and a half different episode titles as well as a few other famous themes (the 1812 Overture, some Loony Tunes, ect). I'd done something similar at ScaperCon a few years ago, but I figured that'd been a while ago, this was a new crowd, and what else would someone nicknamed OboeCrazy do? Accapella agreed to be my human music stand, and I tried to calm my nerves.
- Ben, Fran, and Ricky, the Talent/Costume Judges!
Have I mentioned yet that I'd never actually met Ben Browder in person? Half a dozen years as a fan of this show, several conventions, and a lot of me being a dork, and I'd never met the man. I was a complete nervous wreck. Ask my roomates. They'll tell you. So here comes the judges for the Talent and Costume Show, and it's Ben, Fran, and Ricky, and for some reason known only to Fate and Murphy's Law who's going first? Me.
Sunday I'd get more of a chance to be a dork...but I survived Friday night pretty much because of the oboe. I have a slightly different mindset as a performer when performing, and with playing oboe on my mind I didn't have the capacity to be scared, nervous, or a dork. I was too busy getting ready to play to realize that HOLY FRELL I'M SHAKING BEN BROWDER'S HAND!!!
I survived, I smiled, I played, and I left. I spent the next few minutes sitting in a corner enjoying shaking out all my nerves.
Have I mentioned that I'm a dork?
Anyway I was pretty happy with my performance, but certainly the best Scaper won. Arlo Williams sang a filk from Fiddler On The Roof titled "Since I Started Farscape" that was hysterical and performed absolutely amazingly! She brought the house down, and if we hadn't been running so short on time she would have had to perform it again. It's absolutely frelling fantastic, and if it's posted somewhere GO READ IT! I mean it...stop reading this and go read that filk NOW!

Back? Oh good!
Saturday evening was the Gold Ticket dessert party, and since I'm a poor musician I didn't have gold seats so I went back to the hotel and hung out with all the Scapers. I got a chance to do some Rorschach tests, eat a good meal, and get some sleep.
One more day to go...
